Rocks & Pebbles

Put the big rocks in first. A short exercise for deciding what actually matters.

A jar, some rocks, and a lesson

Watch the jar. It is being filled the wrong way: the tiny pebbles pour in first, then the smaller rocks, and by the time the big rocks arrive there is no room left. They end up on the table.

Then it fills again in the right order, and the same jar holds everything. The big rocks go in first, the smaller rocks fit around them, and the tiny stuff fills whatever is left.

Your jar is your time. The big rocks are the few goals that would make this year matter. This exercise helps you name them, then put them in first.

About this exercise: Based on the well known big rocks demonstration, popularized by Stephen Covey. If you fill the jar with the small stuff first, the big rocks never fit. Your goals stay in your browser and nowhere else.
